Comparison of bike-sharing apps in Singapore – To rent or to own a bike?

When bike-sharing apps first gained traction in 2017, there were many firms competiting such as oBike, Mobike, ofo. At that time, there were many promotions given by the bike-sharing firms. There was even once when ofo gave a 90 day unlimited bike pass (worth $25 at that time) when you purchased $3 worth of H-two-o products. However, many of the bike-sharing firms either went bust like oBike or exited the Singapore market like Mobike.

Currently, there are only 2 bike-sharing apps in Singapore, a far contrast in 2017 where there were many bike-sharing apps one could choose from. These bike-sharing apps are Anywheel and Hello Ride.

Even though there are lesser competitors compared to last time, these bike-sharing apps cost way less than traditional bike rental shops and most do not require deposits too. They too offer the convenience of parking bikes at QR-code parking areas which are spreaded across Islandwide.

Anywheel is also one of the largest bike sharing company in Singapore which started in 2017.

It has two tiers of bikes, the Regular bike and the Family bike.

The regular bike costs $1 for every 30 minutes. It is also covered under the bike pass where you can pay a certain amount in order to get unlimited rides free during the pass validity period, up to 30 minutes per ride.

The Family bike has a child seat included which costs $4 for every 30 minutes. Unlike the Regular bike, the Family bikes are not covered under the Bike Pass and only the standard pay-per-use system is available for this.

Hello ride coverage

Hello Ride bicycles cannot be ridden or parked outside the non-shaded areas.

Currently, there is only one tier of pricing for bikes. It is $1 for the first 30 mins and $0.50 for every subsequent 10 mins. It also have bike passes which can be used. With the bike pass, you can get unlimited rides capped at 30 minutes each, after which additional fees apply.

Bicycle – To rent or to own?

If you are planning to use a bicycle for a short term, you should consider renting. SG Bike and Hello Ride offers the cheapest bike pass for 7 days. Anywheel offers the best value for the 90 days pass, as it can be used island wide as compared to Hello Ride, which offers it slightly cheaper with limited locations.

But what if you are planning to use it long term? To compare, I will be comparing getting a bike pass for 3 years vs getting an own bike. This is on an assumption users typically replace their bikes every 3 years.

The Anywheel 90 days pass cost $26.90. For 3 years, it will be about $322.80. While it may be cheaper as you do not need to pay extra for maintenance, some of the bikes might be faulty whereby extra time would be wasted finding another working.

As for owning a bike, there are many places one can get such as the bike shop or from e-commerce sites. There are many bikes on the cheaper end around the range of around $250 to $450. There are multiple sellers selling bikes on Shopee and Lazada.

One of such examples is the Begasso Soldier series bike. It is a foldable mountain bike and there are different variants of the bike, with the geared version costing more. Its bikes range from $288 (Spoke model on Lazada) to $399. It also comes with a 2 year warranty.

However, one would also need to factor in the maintenance cost. Hence, you should look for bike shops that gives warranty on the bikes sold as that may reduce your maintenance cost.

Hence, if you are going to use the bicycle often, it is better to own a bicycle rather than to rent as there will be time saving in finding a bike. Moreover, you would be able to park the bicycle more conveniently nearer to your destination rather than a rental bike where you have to park at designated areas.

  1. Anywheel has 30000 bikes and Sgbike has 1500.
If you wish to have Singapore coverage. Best is to use HelloRide! As their bicycles are new, clean and comfortable.
